Policies

Grow-Lean has policies to protect you, fellow students and Grow-Lean.

Familiarize yourself with these policies and use our Contact Us Form if you have any questions.

Cancellation and Rescheduling Policies

Overview of Cancellation Policies

Grow-Lean has policies around situations where you as an attendee, or Grow-Lean as a host, must cancel or reschedule. Grow-Lean's policies are consumer-friendly in recognition that unforeseen things happen, but Grow-Lean asks for thoughtfulness about canceling late so Grow-Lean can continue to put their customers first.

By registering yourself or others for the session, or by being a registrant, you agree to the policies below. If you have any questions, please contact Grow-Lean.

Cancellations

Cancellation requests received at least sixteen (16) days prior to the event will receive a 100% refund minus a 5% credit card processing fee.

Cancellation requests received fifteen (15) to eight (8) days prior to the event will receive a 100% refund minus a 5% credit card processing fee and a $125 late cancellation fee.

Cancellation requests received seven (7) or less days prior to the event will receive a credit equal to 50% of the amount paid that can be applied to any future event that the registrant will take in the next twelve months.

Reschedule Requests

Reschedule requests received at least sixteen (16) days prior to the event will have no fees for the first request. Additional reschedule requests will be subject to a $125 transfer fee.

Reschedule requests received less than sixteen (16) days prior to the event will be subject to a $125 transfer fee.

Grow-Lean Reschedule Events

Grow-Lean tries to avoid rescheduling. If Grow-Lean needs to reschedule, all registrants will promptly receive a 100% refund. Registrants may decide to be transferred into the rescheduled event, or another upcoming event, instead of the refund if they desire.

Grow-Lean Trainer Substitution

In the event where the original listed trainer cannot deliver the course, Grow-Lean reserves the right to substitute a trainer. This is a rare occurrence, but this policy allows Grow-Lean to deliver a course while minimizing the student impact. Trainers provided in this event will have met Grow-Lean's high quality standards to ensure registrants receive valuable training.

Session Attendance and Participation Policies

Session Policy Summary

Grow-Lean policies around class (session) participation and course material usage are designed to protect your privacy, the privacy of other students, the intellectual property rights of Grow-Lean LLC, and to maximize the learning outcome for all. By registering for the session, or by being a registrant, you agree to the policies below. If you have any questions, please contact us via our Contact Us form at https://www.grow-lean.com/ContactUs.

Camera Use Policy

You agree to have a functioning camera, which may be on a secondary device (like a phone) on, and facing yourself for the majority of the training. You may turn your camera off for short periods when needed (like when eating).

If your camera is not functioning, or your bandwidth becomes too limited to support video, you will inform the trainer and participate actively to ensure you stay engaged in the session.

If there is a specific reason why you cannot be on camera, contact Grow-Lean LLC prior to the event so that we can make an exception.

Picture Taking

Grow-Lean will sometimes take pictures or videos during the session. Attendees will be notified in advance. If you do not want to be included in a picture or a video, you may turn your camera off during those times. By keeping your camera on, you acknowledge that your image, or edits thereof, may be used for promotion or other purposes. Grow-Lean will try to ensure that those in a video are presented in a professional fashion.

You may not take pictures of any students in the session without the express consent of all attendees and understand that doing so may be a criminal offense depending on the locations where attendees are participating from.

Student Accountability for Training Outcomes

You may use the Contact Us form at https://www.grow-lean.com/ContactUs, or inform the trainer, or both if you believe that there is anything in the training that is preventing you from having a high quality learning experience.

You authorize Grow-Lean to share your name and email with the certifying body, which, depending on the session, is typically the Scrum Alliance, Scaled Agile or IC Agile.

  • Grow-Lean recommends that you use your personal email address instead of your work email when registering for training.
  • This ensures that you will always have access to your account and certifications while also protecting the privacy of your organization.

Communications via Email and Text

Grow-Lean will communicate with you via email, and you may receive several similar emails, or even duplicates in an attempt to ensure that everyone receives the information they need. You may contact Grow-Lean via the Contact Us Page if this becomes a problem.

Discounts

Options for your circumstances

Request your discount on the session (a class on date/time with a trainer) you want. If more than one discount applies explain in your comments.

You can pay in installments by choosing Splitit at checkout.

For Grow-Lean Alumni, log in or use your account email when registering, and receive an automatic discount. If you also qualify for another discount, request it, and, if your email matches, we know you are an alumni.

If you have a Visa or Mastercard credit card you can pay in monthly installments. There are no fees or interest if you pay on time! Your available credit must be enough to cover the full cost and there is a hold on your credit card for the amount that you have not paid.

For example, if your final fee is $999 and you choose three installments:

  • You would pay $333 today and have a $666 hold placed on your credit card.
  • The following month your credit card would be charged another $333 and the hold would be reduced to $333.
  • Your final payment would be $333.

If you are not familiar with the term "hold" this is similar to what hotels do when you check in, to cover extra expenses you may incur including the mini bar.

The benefit to you is that you do not pay any interest or fees if all payments are on time.

After entering your request you may email us at [email protected] or call us +1.609.975.9294 for questions.

Preparation for Session

Maximize learning by preparing your technology for the session

We use common tools for our virtual sessions. Please read on to confirm what you need for the Certified ScrumMaster session.

  • Computer or tablet with internet: Most participants use one device (laptop with webcam). Some prefer two devices. One for video and another for viewing shared materials.
  • Webcam: Nearly all laptops have built-in webcams. If yours doesn't, you can use your phone as a webcam.
  • Audio: Headset, earbuds, or your device's built-in microphone and speakers all work fine.
  • Zoom access: New to Zoom? Test your setup at zoom.us/test. Click "Join" and follow the prompts. Need help? See Zoom's test meeting guide.
  • A comfortable space: Find a spot where you can focus during class. Ideally with:
    • Good lighting
    • Minimal background noise
    • Limited interruptions

Don't stress about perfection! We understand that kids, pets, family members, or roommates may make appearances. It's all part of remote learning.

  • Practice with Mural: Mural is a virtual white board.
    • Prior to the session, visit https://learn.mural.co/.
    • After the session, we will provide you with an electronic copy of the completed Mural Board.
  • Appropriate Display(s): If you are using a computer, such as a laptop, with a small display, you will benefit from one of the following:
    • Using a secondary device, such as an iPad, a tablet, or even a iPhone or Android phone, for Mural, while using your primary device for Zoom (or vice a versa).
    • Using a secondary monitor attached to your primary device.
    • Using a TV, perhaps connected via HDMI, for Zoom and use your primary device for Mural. You can also purchase a small, portable, external monitor that runs 1080p for under $50 USD.
    • Purchasing a small, portable, external monitor that runs 1080p for under $50 USD. In addition to being low-cost a portable monitor takes up very little space.
  • Getting into the Session: The Zoom information will be provided to you prior to the session.

David Bulkin

Scrum Alliance: CST | CSP-SM | CSP-PO | CAL 1 | SAFe: SPC | PMI: PMI-ACP

David Bulkin is the Managing Director and Head of Training Services at Grow-Lean. He has 40 years of product development experience and stays current by continuing to engage in product development. In 2001, his eBanking Team at JP Morgan Chase implemented Agile practices under the guidance of Kent Beck, the father of Extreme Programming (XP). David left the bank to help grow the Agile community.

David supports teams and individuals in their Agile journeys as a mentor and coach. Unlike most trainers and coaches, he remains actively involved in product development, taking on roles such as designer, coder, tester, Product Owner, and Scrum Master. His hands-on experience and high-energy level ensure that you get practical and applicable insights in a fun, lively environment.

David's extensive background spans various industries, including manufacturing, marketing, sales, finance, and more. David started developing in 1984 when he built a package to simulate Major League Baseball games and run a fantasy league. After that, he worked on various development projects for the US DoD. In the early 1990s, he built an Internet startup that delivered some of the first profitable sites on the web. In the late 1990s, he joined JP Morgan Chase, where, in 2001, he led eBanking development using agile methods.

He was an independent reviewer of the original PMI-ACP body of knowledge and contributed to the Certified Scrum Master Exam questions. His thought leadership in 2009 on progressive elaboration for Agile requirements influenced what is now known as refinement, which was incorporated into Scrum in 2011.

David has trained over 20,000 students and influenced thousands more through public speaking and coaching. He delivers various training courses, including CSM, A-CSM, CSPO, and A-CSPO, and has trained over 10,000 students with the Scrum Alliance. His sessions are practical, energetic and fun, and based on his experiences in big and small organizations, David customizes the training for your needs so you get a practical perspective that can significantly boost your career.

A unique CSM course taught by highly engaging agile experts with decades of real-world Scrum experience

Exercise samples shown throughout this page are representative. Visual materials vary by trainer.

Key Details

100% Live and Engaging

Live workshop with no slides and no PowerPoint. Master the Scrum Master role through hands-on exercises, real-world scenarios, and practical facilitation techniques.

30+ Exercises for Deep Learning

Exercises drive the session so you learn concepts in an engaging manner. Exercises are done in small breakout rooms and then the entire class reviews to ensure practical learning and skill development.

Go Beyond the Scrum Guide

A great Scrum Master does not just know Scrum. They give their team the tools and techniques to execute better. This course is built around exactly that.

Take Bill Wake's INVEST model (shown here). Rather than simply telling your team to write better stories, you will leave this course with a concrete framework you can provide them to evaluate and shape high-quality user stories. That is the difference between describing good practices and actually enabling them.

Throughout this course, you will build a toolkit of models, frameworks, and facilitation techniques you can share with your team immediately, whether you are coaching Developers, guiding a struggling Product Owner, or removing impediments that are slowing the team down.

You will also explore how AI tools are reshaping the Scrum Master role. From accelerating backlog refinement to surfacing impediments faster, you will learn how to lead teams effectively in an AI-assisted workplace.

No Myths, Fluff, Filler, Videos, or Slides

Our session has 30+ exercises and deep discussion leaving no time for fluff, fillers, videos and other non-value added content.

We avoid oversimplified answers and common myths. For example...

  • No, you're not a secretary taking notes and booking meetings.
  • No, you don't have to be a project manager in disguise.
  • No, servant leadership doesn't mean being a pushover.

What You Learn

Coverage in the Certified ScrumMaster

The Agile Manifesto & Principles

A deep dive into the 4 values and 12 principles of the Agile Manifesto gives you the philosophical foundation you need to understand why Scrum works the way it does. You will explore what each value and principle means in practice, not just on paper.

Understanding the Manifesto deeply allows you to answer the toughest questions from your team with confidence and help your organization make better decisions grounded in agile thinking.

Applying the Scrum Framework

Go beyond memorizing the Scrum Guide. You will learn how to run Scrum effectively through hands-on exercises covering all three pillars of the framework:

  • Roles: Help Developers and the Product Owner excel as a self-managing team.
  • Events: Facilitate Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, and the Retrospective with skill and purpose.
  • Artifacts: Ensure the Product Backlog and Sprint Backlog are lightweight, actionable, and maximizing value.
How the Scrum Master Serves the Team

A great Scrum Master is a servant leader who empowers the team rather than directing them. You will learn how to coach Developers toward self-management, support the Product Owner in maximizing product value, and help the broader organization understand and adopt Scrum.

Through hands-on exercises, you will practice removing impediments, facilitating productive conversations, and creating an environment where your team can do their best work consistently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Things to know

The Scrum Master and the CSM Certification

The Scrum Master helps Developers and Product Owners grow as individuals and as a team, improving outcomes for everyone - the team members, the Scrum Team as a whole, and the entire organization.

Here's how a Scrum Master creates value:

Supporting Both Developers and Product Owner

  • Enable self-management: The Scrum Master ensures teams have the autonomy and authority they need. For example, at Sprint Planning, Developers discuss options with the Product Owner, make final decisions about what enters the Sprint, and plan how work gets done - rather than being told what to do by managers.
  • Address impediments: While Scrum Masters sometimes remove obstacles directly (like coordinating with other teams on dependencies), they more often help teams navigate around impediments and maintain quality delivery despite challenges. The key is never accepting barriers as inevitable.

Supporting Developers

  • Foster self-management: Help Developers figure out what to work on and how to approach it, while staying aligned with the Sprint Goal - rather than waiting for instructions.
  • Encourage cross-functional work: Create a safe environment where team members work outside their specialties (analysts testing, testers analyzing). This drives individual growth, increases motivation, and reduces risk from single points of expertise. The Scrum Master coaches collaboration patterns to overcome natural hesitancy about leaving comfort zones.
  • Facilitate effective Scrum Events: Ensure events like the Daily Scrum are run by Developers for Developers, focused on creating better plans rather than just reporting status.
  • Improve technical practices: Coach practices like Test First Development, Pair Programming, Swarming, and Refactoring to enhance product quality and team effectiveness.

Supporting the Product Owner

  • Communicate a clear, compelling product vision
  • Develop long-term roadmaps and effective forecasting
  • Organize and prioritize the Product Backlog
  • Apply evidence-based, empirical product development methods

Supporting the Organization

  • Build understanding of evidence-based, empirical approaches across the organization
  • Address structural barriers to agility (shifting from yearly budgets to continuous flow, functional silos to feature teams, and output metrics to outcome metrics)
  • Create and execute long-term agility roadmaps
  • Remove organizational blockers as they emerge

Not at all. While agile originated in software development, it has expanded dramatically across industries and roles.

Our CSM classes welcome:

  • Career changers: Teachers, sales professionals, healthcare workers, administrators, and others transitioning into IT or agile roles
  • Current professionals: Marketing teams, product developers, project managers, and business analysts applying agile in their existing roles
  • Anyone interested in agile: If you want to learn collaborative, adaptive ways of working, you belong here

You don't need a technical background to become an effective Scrum Master.

Who Should Attend

The CSM is often the launching point on an agile journey regardless of role

The CSM is the de facto training to checkpoint or start an agile journey to build practical agile skills. Although it is titled "ScrumMaster," it is applicable regardless of your role or planned role. As such, attendees come from a wide variety of backgrounds:

  • Scrum Masters and Aspiring Scrum Masters:
If you're currently serving as a Scrum Master or aspire to become one, the CSM course is a great fit. You'll learn how to guide teams, facilitate conversations, manage impediments, and coach team members.
  • Professionals from Various Industries:
Scrum principles extend beyond software development. Marketing, manufacturing, data science, HR, and other fields benefit from applying Scrum practices.
  • College Students:
If you are in college and want to increase your job prospects upon graduating the CSM may be right for you.
  • Anyone Interested in Agility and an Agile Mindset:
The CSM course emphasizes an agile mindset. Learn how to lead self-organizing teams, remove impediments, facilitate growth and apply the Scrum framework effectively.

After completing the Grow-Lean CSM, you'll be prepared to pass the CSM exam and continue your journey. If you want to perform better at work or expand your career opportunities, the Grow-Lean CSM course is an excellent choice!

By taking the session you earn the right to take the certification exam. Once you pass the exam, you are a Certified ScrumMaster.

The certification will help differentiate you , but more importantly, the learning will allow you to interview with more confidence and apply core agile product development techniques in the workplace. The session, plus actual work experience, will allow you to pursue the Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM) and Certified Scrum Professional ScrumMaster (CSP-SM) certifications.

Will this Training Benefit You?

This course rewards the right mindset. Find out if it's yours.

Appropriate use of agile requires a mindset and approach that may differ from your current approach. Read the points below to see if the session is right for you.

If You Are a Continual Learner

Our Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) course is designed for those who are ready to embark on a continuous learning journey across any field or discipline. Agile and Scrum are deep topics, and excelling in an agile role requires dedication and effort beyond the classroom. Our course provides a solid foundation from which to grow, not a final destination, so you will need continued hard work outside the classroom.

If You Think Critically

Agility is about adapting as the context changes. If you thrive in environments where flexibility and critical thinking are valued over following rigid, detailed instructions, our session will be a good fit for you.

If You Embrace Nuance

The principles of agile are universal, yet their application can vary across different industries. This session is ideal for those who can embrace nuance and apply agile thinking to their unique situations.

If You Appreciate Constructive Feedback

We build our sessions on constructive feedback. Our trainers are committed to guiding you toward deeper understanding, helping you learn and grow. This requires that you be open to feedback that may challenge your current mental models.

In Summary

If you are someone who is always learning, and you are willing to apply critical thinking, work through ambiguity, embrace nuance, and question your own mental models, our CSM will likely benefit you . If not, you may want to consider a different certification or training provider.

Job Prospects for Scrum Masters

Scrum Master jobs are growing and the salaries are generous

Note on this data: The figures above reflect 2022 salary data. Since then, many large companies have reduced headcount broadly, not just in agile roles. That said, Scrum Master positions remain active at small and mid-size companies, where agile adoption continues to grow and demand for skilled practitioners is steady.
Frequently Asked Questions About Scrum Master Salaries
Will taking this class help me get a job as a Scrum Master?
While taking this class does not guarantee a Scrum Master position, it significantly improves your chances of landing an interview.

Our Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) course provides a solid conceptual foundation along with practical tools you can apply immediately. You'll gain the knowledge and confidence to pass the certification exam (which is the easy part) and, more importantly, speak effectively about Agile and Scrum in interviews.

In addition to the course, we offer six practice exams to help you prepare thoroughly. Like the training, these exams not only help you pass the test,—they reinforce key vocabulary and concepts so you can interview and perform more effectively.

Your success in securing a job also depends on your background, experience, and your continued effort beyond the classroom.
These salaries seem high, are they achievable for me?
The salaries on our website were obtained from Zip Recruiter on 11-May-2022 and represent US based salaries. Many Scrum Masters work in Information Technology (IT) and IT jobs are generally well compensated. Realistically you should not expect to start at the high end of the range unless you have deep, relevant experience and knowledge.
What type of people are best suited to become Scrum Masters?
A Scrum Master is often called a servant leader. A servant leader ensures other people grow and succeed. Those most likely to become good Scrum Masters have a calm, nurturing demeanor, can handle stress, ambiguity, uncertainty, and bring people together to work for common goals and objectives.
